But how do we raise our Infamy in Maneater?
Like most watery horror films, it starts with some good old-fashioned human killing. These can be innocent bystanders on land, unsuspecting swimmers, or leisurely boaters, it doesn’t really matter.
You just need to kill enough humans to raise your threat level, which eventually causes hunters to begin searching for you.
The Hunter Becomes the Hunted
Taking down the first few waves of hunters shouldn’t really be a problem, but their potency and numbers quickly start to stack up.
The best tactic for turning the hunters into your next meal starts with swimming in large circles, ducking in and out of range of the hunter’s boats.
This will make it harder for them to hit you repeatedly, and gives you a better angle of approach if they don’t see you coming. Any time they start targeting you, hit “RB” to dodge away, and they won’t be able to touch you.
You want to Knife through the water by holding “LT” while you’re swimming along the surface, then leap out of the water with “B” and hit “RT” to lunge through the air at a hunter and grab them from their boat.
If you’re low on health, keep pressing “RT” to eat them and regain some health. You can also use them as projectiles to knock more hunters into the water; hold enemies in your mouth by holding “RT” down, then press “LB” to Tailwhip them at another target.
This lets you deal with multiple threats in quick succession, as the more hunters you knock into the water, the less there will be trying to shoot you.
Evolution is a Shark’s Best Friend
Unlike your threat meter, your Infamy rank doesn’t decrease, so don’t feel the need to try and hit Infamy 10 in one go.
In fact, Bone Body — one of the most useful evolutions for fighting higher-leveled hunters — doesn’t unlock until the 5th story chapter, so you’ll want to wait until you unlock this before taking on the higher ranks.
Hearty, gained by defeating Bobbie Bojangles at Infamy Rank 2, and Mineral Digestion at Infamy Rank 3 are two vital evolutions that should be secured early and upgraded to their maximum level.
Once you have reached the higher Infamy ranks, upgrading the Bone set of evolutions is important to defeating the bigger hunter boats, with the Bone Body and Bone Fin evolutions being particularly important.
With these two, your dodge attack, and your Y-button ability, will do extreme damage to the stronger boats that start spawning from Infamy Rank 6 and onward.
You can swap to this technique and pretty much ignore the hunters once you’ve leveled the evolutions high enough.
After this, reaching Infamy Rank 10 should be a gentle walk in the… uh… ocean?
If you’re finding the hunter fights difficult, here are a few final tips to give you a fighting edge.
Firstly, don’t be afraid to disengage. If you turn and swim away, the boats won’t be fast enough to catch you, especially if you’re in an area where you can dive deep enough to evade their sight entirely.
You should also use this time to heal up; eating fish, other predators, and even humans will replenish your health bar.
Finally, if reinforcements stop spawning at any point while you’re trying to raise your Infamy and your threat level starts to drop, submerge and search for any Hunter Divers. These divers often count as active units and unless you kill them, new reinforcements won’t spawn.
